Simple Composting Tips
Proper compost should be well mixed, oxygenated, moist and have the
right carbon to nitrogen ratio.
That means: Rotate the drum regularly to add oxygen to
your composted pile, and add moisture if you think the compost is
looking too dry. Rotating the waste will evenly distribute moisture,
allow for oxygenation, and mix the new waste with the old.
- Compost likes heat: The drum will keep your
compost warm when temperatures are 50 degrees F. or above. But as
temperatures drop below 50 degrees F., composting will stop. You do
not want to rotate the drum at temperatures under 50 degrees. Let
your composter rest till Spring. However, you can continue to add
waste to the drum. (Just do not rotate the drum till Spring)
- Carbon/Nitrogen Ratio: For faster
decomposition, add carbon rich material (browns) like sawdust, straw
and dry leaves, into a nitrogen rich mixture of kitchen scraps and
garden waste. It is best to chop up the waste if possible, since
smaller waste breaks down faster. (cut up watermelon rinds,
cantaloupe skin, etc.)
