What is Composting?
Composting is one of the oldest forms of recycling known to
mankind.
Composting is the natural process of recycling decomposed
organic materials into a rich luscious soil known as compost. Anything
that was once alive will decompose. By composting your organic waste:
egg shells, fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, yard waste,
etc.. you are returning nutrients back into the soil in order for the
cycle of life to continue. Completed compost looks like crumbly soil,
dark brown, and smells like you're in a deep forest.
Two Types Of Composting ~
- GARDEN COMPOSTING — If you have a yard and a
balance of "browns" (fallen leaves) and greens (grass clippings and
food scraps), you're well on your way to making compost!
- WORM COMPOSTING / VERMICOMPOSTING — If you have
a small yard or live in an apartment, have an abundance of food
scraps, this type of composting might be for you.
Why Should I
Compost?
- Did you know........ yard and food waste makes up 20 - 30
percent of waste stream in the United States. Composting your
kitchen and yard trimmings keeps that waste from ending up in our
landfills, waterways and water treatment facilities.
- Healthy rich soil produces healthier garden plants that are
better equipped to fight off pests and diseases.
- Adding organic materials to the soil improves moisture
retention.
- Adding decomposed organic material to the soil feeds beneficial
organisms.
- Compost amends both sandy and clay soils.
- Compost provides a naturally balanced, slow–release source of
nutrients that helps the soil hold nutrients long enough for plants
to use them.
- Composting SAVES MONEY–you avoid the cost of buying soil
conditioners, bagged manure, hauling it home, etc.
- Feeding your plants well will improve your own diet. Plants
grown in depleted soils have a reduced nutrient content.
- Home composting is a valuable tool in educating children about
nature and the cycle of life.
- Composting makes good sense!! And that is WHY we should do it.
